• Edit Pad - This useful freeware program goes far beyond that of Windows Notepad and combines some interesting HTML and text editing features. With Edit Pad, you can open multiple documents at once and save them directly in the correct format. Multiple language versions are also available, plus we've found the application equally as good for tweaking CGI scripts and displaying .txt files.

• NoteTab Light - A leading text/HTML editor that can handle much larger files than Windows Notepad. It allows you to build document templates, covert text to HTML, create programs and do many more things. With its "tabbed" interface you can open numerous documents at once or use the program as a clipboard. This freeware version is totally free and has no advertisements.

• Tag Check - This freeware program will check your HTML Web site coding for errors, then suggest ways in which you can improve it. The "Tag Check" setup file usually downloads in less than a minute on a standard 56k modem and covers common spelling and coding mistakes into its HTML database. Note: Not as detailed as commercial apps, but ideal for general everyday use.

• Web Crafter - Web Crafter is a great freeware HTML editor for Windows 95 or later and features plenty of tools to aid in manual HTML coding. Toolbars with common functions, wizards, built-in Web browsers and FTP client are all included here, plus a file explorer tool and colour-to-HEX converter. The program and setup files are compressed in a zip file and requires a tool such as WinZip to open.

• Text 2 HTML - This entirely free program will convert your text files to HTML documents with ease. It features a command line and handles FTP, HTTP and MAILTO tags. Additionally, Text 2 HTML has a simple, but easy to use "drag, drop and launch" interface, making it ideal for inexperienced users. It is a small freeware application that's received various awards from software Web sites.

• RoughDraft - Impressive text editing program that supports a wide variety of popular formats, such as .txt, HTML and Rich Text Format (RTF). RoughDraft (which is made in Britain), also supports an accurate English spellchecker, has shortcut keys for almost every function, numerous clipboards for pasting and supports 100 simultaneous documents. Note: comprehensive help is also available.

• HTML Builder XP Lite - A powerful, but user-friendly freeware HTML editor, specifically developed for quick and efficient Web site creation. It includes features such HTML syntax highlighting, automatic tag completion, PHP variable recognition, spell checker and thesaurus. It also comes complete with a meta tag creation wizard, DHTML and JavaScript "smart" insertion engine.
